Festival of the dead

This month has been quite a wet month.  Since we have heavy rain pretty

much every day, the roads are really muddy and slippery.

Ce mois ci a ete un mois tres trempe.  Parce qu'on a eu de la pluie forte 

pratiquement tout les jours, les routes sont bouetteuses et glissantes.

But it is a very important month for Cambodian, since it is one of their most important festival.  For 2 weeks, older people will go to the temple to worship their ancestors.  People that work or go to school will go only the last 3 days of the festival.  Lots of studies cancelled their studies during that week, having their whole family visiting from the capital.  This older lady thought, could study.  She explain to us that after the war Cambodia received a lot of international  help. Some countries gave wheat.  Since they have never seen wheat at that time, they tried to cook it the same way as the rice.  It became hard and not eatable! 

Mais c'est un mois tres important pour les cambogiens, puisque c'est le temps pour un de leur festivals des plus important.  Pour 2 semaines, les personnes agees vont aller au temple pour adorer leurs ancetres.  Les gens qui travaillent ou vont a l'ecole vont adorer seulement les 3 derniers jours.  Beaucoup d'etudes ne peuvent pas etudier car leur famille les visites de la capital.  Cette dame agee a pu etudier.  Elle a expliquer que apres la guerrre le camboge a recu de l'aide international.  Certains pays on donner du blees.  Comme ils n'avaient jamais vue le blees, ils l'ont cuisiner comme du riz.  C'etait pas mangeable!

 All families make a special cake for the occasion.  It is stiky rice with banana or pork or beans inside.  It is covered with banana leaf.

Tout les familles font un gateau special pour l'occasion.  C'est du riz colant avec de la banane ou du porc ou des bines a l'interieur.  C'est couvert d'une feuille de banane.

End of the year

To celebrate the end of the year we decided to go to the beach.  We took a 'taxi' (it's a car that waits till it has 7 guests and the driver, so 4 in the back and 4 in the front). It takes 3 hours to get there.  Our taxi had 6 men, 2 women and a child of about 3 years old that cried the whole way. The man with the hat is the driver.

Pour celebrer la fin de l'annee on a decider d'aller a la plage.  On a prit un 'taxi' (c'est une voiture qui attend jusqu'a ce qu'il y a 7 passagers, 4 en arriere, 4 en avant incluant le conducteur).  C'a prend 3 heures pour ce rendre.  Notre Taxi avait 6 hommes, 2 femmes et une enfant d'a peu pres 3 ans qui a pleurer toute le long.

 

We went to the same beach as when I got stung by a jelly fish so I was a bit worried.

On est aller a la meme plage que quand je me suis fait bruler par une metuse alors j'etais un peu inquiete.

But I didn't need to worry, it rained THE WHOLE TIME!  So we couldn't swim in the ocean.  After we went to Phnom Penh cause I needed to work for a few days.  The minute we arrived I remembered why I hated the city:  the horrible traffic.  But then, we went to eat baba in a little restaurant with some friends and it made me remember why I like it.  Here is a picture of salty eggs that we usually eat with the baba. 

Mais j'avais pas besoin de m'inquieter car il a plu TOUT LE LONG! Alors on n'a pas pu nager dans la mer.  Apres on est aller a Phnom Penh parce que je devais travailler pour quelques jours.  La seconde arriver je me suis souvenue pourquoi j'haie la ville: l'horrible traffic.  Mais apres, on est aller manger avec des amis et je me suis souvenue pourquoi j aime la ville. Voici une photo des oeufs sale que l'on mange normallement avec le baba.

Our friends also ate pork intestine, really gourmet here!

Nos amis ont aussi manger des intestins de porc, vraiment gourmet ici!!

There is a new mall in town now with the FIRST movie theater.  There are some karaoke rooms too.  So we decided to try it.

Il y a un nouveau centre d'achat en ville avec le premier cinema.  Il y a aussi des chambres karaoke.  Alors on a decider de l'essayer.

Now we are back in our village, happy to be back.  We missed our brothers and our studies.

Maintenant nous revoila dans notre territoire, heureux d'etre de retour.  On a manquer nos freres et nos etudes.

Special Day

Every week, Thary and I go to a far village to study with some families.  To our surprise, a few showed up for the special day, some 80 or more km away. / Tout les semaines, Thary et moi allons dans un village pour etudier avec des familles.  Quel surprise quand on a vue quelques uns arriver pour la journee special, a quelque chose comme 80km de chez eux.

Our group had organised a car to go to the special day.  / Notre groupe avait organiser une voiture pour la journee special.

11 got baptised, 1 from our group.  Here he is, looking good with is new blue and gray tie.  His cosins came for the special event.  Hiro studies with the younger boy.  He got him some clothes for the event. / 11 se sont fait baptiser dont 1 de notre groupe.Le voici avec sa nouvelle cravate bleu et grise.  Ses cousins sont venu pour l'evenement.  Hiro etudie avec le jeune garcon.  Il lui a trouver des vetements pour l'occasion.

Here we are, all the sisters from Quebec present for the special day. / Nous voici, toutes les quebecoises qui etaient presentes pour la journee special.

We had a peek of 849 in attendance! / Nous avons eu une assistance record de 849!  

Weekend at Kep

Every 6 to 8 weeks, the 4 of us get together to play games.  Sadly, Jimmy will have to move so we decided to have our game weekend at a very nice hotel. Here is the restaurant. / Tout les 6 a 8 semaines, Nous jouons a des jeux tout les 4.  Tristement, Jimmy doit demenager donc nous avons decider de faire notre weekend de jeu a une tres belle hotel.

A few minutes walk brings you to the Crab Market.  They are restaurants on the ocean where sea food are fished. / Une marche de quelques minutes nous amene au Crab Market.  Ce sont des restaurant sur la mer ou les fruits de mer sont pecher.

Delicieux!!!

Sadly I dont have pictures of the gorgeous rooms we had and the swimming pool, that we sadly could not enjoy since it rain ALL weekend. / Tristement je n'ai pas de photo de nos superbes chambres et de la picine que nous avons pas pu profiter puisqu'il a plue tout le weekend.

Telephone with camera

Phone are super cool these days. Mine is a 'walkman' when i travel, a claculator when at work, a reminder for changing oil on my bike. But best of all, it has a camera for the unexpected./Les telephones sont vraiment cool ces jours-ci. Le mien est un 'walkman' quand je voyage, une calculatrice quand je travail, un aide memoire pour changer l'huile de ma moto. Mais le meilleur, il y a une camera  pour le pas plannifier!

Here is a cobra that was found on the land of a family, where we have the meeting.  It had to be find and killed since it was putting the  life of the family living on that land in danger. The men of the village were very  happy to eat the snake after./ Voici un cobra qui a ete trouve sur la terre d'une famille ou on a nos reunions.  On devait le trouver et le tuer  car la vie de la famille etait en danger.  Les hommes du village se sont fait un  plaisir de manger le serpent.

Or when we find a scorpion, that was also eaten. / Ou quand on trouve un scorpion qui a aussi ete manger.

Or when we arrive at the group and have the great joy of seeing a new publisher that will preach for the very first time./ Ou quand on arrive au groupe et qu'on a la joie de voir un nouveau proclamateur qui va precher pour la toute premiere fois.

Another unforgettable moment is when snacks are offered before the meeting. Don't  ask me what it is. I know it can fly! / Un autre moment innoubliable est quand snacks  sont offert a la reunion. Ne me demander pas ce que c'est. Je sais que c'a peut voler.

I finished my work at the airport. It was interesting but i am happy i am back
in the field. I missed it. Here is us, having fun instead of working! 
Some things cannot change.../ J'ai fini mon travail a l'aeroport.  C'etait interessant 
mais je suis contente d'etre de retour dans le service. C'a m'a manquer.  
Nous voici, a nous amuser au lieu de travailler. Y'a des choses qui ne change pas...

April

April is such a special month.  Most of the time, it is when the memorial occur.  This year I was responsable for the bread.  I got a team ready for such an important task. / Avril est un mois vraiment special.  La plupard du temps, c'est quand on celebre le memorial.  J'etais responsable pour faire le pain.  J'ai mis une equipe pour cette tache importante.

Here Thary is starting the fire with some garbage. / Ici Thary est en train de partir un feu avec des vidanges.

Then Vana is mixing the floor (made with some sort of root) with water. / Puis Vana mix la farine (fait d'une sorte de racine) avec de l eau.

The mixture is cooked in a big pot. / Le melange est cuit dans un grand bol.

Et voila!!!

Hiro was responsable for installing the tent. / Hiro etait responsable pour installer la tente.

Cleaning 'of the hall'.  I had no idea how much of work this can be.  We had to 'sweep' the land with a small 'broom' made of branches.  / Le menage 'de la salle'.  J'avais pas d'idee comment ca pouvait etre tant de travail.  On devait 'balayer' le terrain avec un petit 'balais' fait de branches. 

We prepared all day for this important event. / On a preparer toute la journee pour ce beau moment. 

Even the dogs didn't miss. / Meme les chiens n'ont pas manquer.

I'd say that over 30 peoples came from villages that are more than an hour far.  Here travelling at night is something very very difficult. 2 villages rented a tuktuk where about 10 people were sitting in it. / Je crois que plus de 30 personnes sont venu de villages de plus de 1 heure loin.  Ici voyager le soir c'est quelque chose de tres difficile. 2 villages ont louer un tuktuk ou 10 a peu pres personnes etaient assis a l interieur.

Here is Tcharun.  He's studying the bible and coming to the meeting eventhough his family are not interested.  He helped also for making the bread as you can see. / Voici Tcharun. Il etudie la bible et vient au reunion meme si sa famille ne sont pas interesser.  Comme vous pouvez le voir, il a aider a faire le pain.

And here is our bread.  Everybody was happy they were not anointed when they saw those million ants on it. / Et voici le pain.  Tout le monde etait content de ne pas etre oins quand ils ont vue les million de fourmis dessus.

So for our 5 regular pioneers, 6 baptised publishers that were all auxiliary pioneers, 1 unbaptised publisher, we welcomed 87 people.  For the whole country we were 1768. / Alors pour nos 5 pionniers permanents, 6 proclamateurs baptisers qui etait tous pionniers auxilieres, 1 proclamateur non baptiser, on a acqueilli 87 personnes.  Pour tout le pays on etait 1768.

But April had other beautiful moment.  Here is one, the birth of Bibi, the cow living on the land where we have our meetings.  I guess 1 more in attendance. / Mais avril a eu d'autre beau moment, En voici une, la naissance de Bibi, la vache qui vit sur le terrain ou on a nos reunions.  Je crois qu'on aura 1 de plus comme assistance.

Joy in Jehovah's service

Hiro went to a return visit that found 2 baby owls that could not fly yet.  We wanted to bring one home but here they bellieve that owls bring death so it would have freaked out our landlord.  / Hiro a ete a une visite qui avait 2 bebes chouettes.  On voulait en garder une mais ici les gens croient que le hibou apporte la mort.  On aurait fait peur a notre proprietaire. 

 

When we go to people houses, we have the privilege to see people's work and how things are made.  Our village is famous for sugar palm.  Here you can see how it is made.  Same principle as maple sirop.  The 'blood' of the palm tree is collected and boiled till it is thick enough. / Quand on visite les gens chez eux, on a le priviledge de voir leur travail, et comment les choses sont faites.  Notre village est connu pour le sucre de palmier.  Sur la photo vous pouvez voir comment ca se fait.  C'est le meme principe que le sirop d'erable.  Le 'sang' du palmier est bouillie jusqu'a ce que soit assez epais.

And of course, children are always interesting.  Their games, their contribution in the family, their honesty makes it all worthwide. / Bien sure les enfants sont toujours interessants.  Leur jeux, leur travail pour la famille, leur honetete rend la visite encore plus interessante.
