Joy in Jehovah's service

Hiro went to a return visit that found 2 baby owls that could not fly yet.  We wanted to bring one home but here they bellieve that owls bring death so it would have freaked out our landlord.  / Hiro a ete a une visite qui avait 2 bebes chouettes.  On voulait en garder une mais ici les gens croient que le hibou apporte la mort.  On aurait fait peur a notre proprietaire. 

 

When we go to people houses, we have the privilege to see people's work and how things are made.  Our village is famous for sugar palm.  Here you can see how it is made.  Same principle as maple sirop.  The 'blood' of the palm tree is collected and boiled till it is thick enough. / Quand on visite les gens chez eux, on a le priviledge de voir leur travail, et comment les choses sont faites.  Notre village est connu pour le sucre de palmier.  Sur la photo vous pouvez voir comment ca se fait.  C'est le meme principe que le sirop d'erable.  Le 'sang' du palmier est bouillie jusqu'a ce que soit assez epais.

And of course, children are always interesting.  Their games, their contribution in the family, their honesty makes it all worthwide. / Bien sure les enfants sont toujours interessants.  Leur jeux, leur travail pour la famille, leur honetete rend la visite encore plus interessante.

Making sweets

Premierement, le melange de grains de riz, eau et une plante sont ecraser pour donner un liquide epais. /  First the mixture of grains of rice, water and a kind of herb in mixed.

La chair de la noix de coco est rappe.  Le fruit sera tramper plusieurs fois dans de l'eau pour en faire du lait de coco.  Plus le lait de coco sera melanger avec du sucre de palm. /  The flesh of a coconut is grinded. The fruit will be put in water many times to make coconut milk.  Then it will be mixed with sugar palm.

Durant ce temps, la mixture de riz sera bouilli jusqu'a ce qu'elle deviene assez epaisse.  Elle sera passer dans un chaudron avec des trous. / Meanwhile, the rice mixture is boiled till it is thick enough.  It will then be passed through a pot with holes.

On met le melange de lait de coco sur les 'nouilles de riz' et le resultat est vraiment delicieux.  Cette assiette coute dix cents.  Les soeurs font normallement 2.50$ par jour chacune, ce qui est vraiment bien. / We put the coconut mixture on the 'rice noodles' and the result is really delicious.  This plate cost 10 cents.  The sisters make normally 2.50$ a day each, which is really good.

Durant sa visite en decembre, Melissa a decider d'aider notre jeune soeur a vendre le dessert au marcher. / During her visit in December, Melissa decided to help our young sister to sell the desert at the market.

Rice

En aout et septembre, on plante le riz dans des rizieres qui sont normallement couvertent d'eau.  Cette annee, la pluie a commencer plus tard, ce qui fait le travail plus dure. / In August and September, we plant the rice in patties that are normally covered of water.  This year the rainny season started later which makes the work harder.

Voici nos precieux freres et soeurs au travail. / Here are our precious brothers and sisters at work.

En decembre on ramasse le riz, quand il est couleur dore.  Le riz derriere n'est pas encore pret pour la recolte. / In December we pick up the rice, when it is gold color.  The rice behind is not ready yet.

Et oui, le travail ce fait dans l'eau.  On doit faire attention au serpents, bebites... / Yes, the work in done in water.  We have to be careful of snakes, bugs...

Quand on en a couper suffisament, on l'attache avec une pogne de riz et on met toute les bottes dans la charette que les vaches apporteront a la maison. / When we cut enough, we attach them with rice, and we put the rice in a chariot that the cows will bring back home.

La, on frappe le riz sur un morceau de bois, ou une pierre et le riz tombe.  L'herbe est donner au vaches. / There, we hit the rice on a piece of wood or stone.  The rice fall.  The grass is given to the cows to eat.

Le tout est secher au soleil. / The rice is dried under the sun.

A morning in the field

Groups are at 8 in the morning.  We usually go 2 to 3 motos to the territory, having 2 or 3 persons on each moto. / Les groupes sont a 8h le matin.  On va normallement 2 a 3 motos au territoire, avec 2 ou 3 personnes sur chaque moto. 

Here are our single sisters:  Thary, Vanna and Sreipeu that are fleshly sisters, and Melissa that is visiting us from Phnom Penh. /  Voici nos soeurs celibataires: Thary, Vanna et Sreipeu qui sont des soeurs charnels, et Melissa qui nous visite de Phnom Penh.

It is normal here for a woman to hold the hand of another woman or a man of another man.  But we never see a man and a woman holding hands. / Il est normal ici qu'une femme tienne la main d'une autre femme ou d'un homme a un autre homme.  Mais on ne voit jamais un homme et une femme se prendre par la main.

Busy till 10hrs. / Occupe jusqu'a 10hrs.

We sometimes stop for coffee, a coconut or sugarcane juice.  Cambodian coffee is really good. / On arrete parfois pour un cafe, une coconut ou un jus de canne a sucre.  Le cafe cambodien est vraiment bon.

After 10h, we go to studies.  Here are some of my students: / Apres 10h on va a des etudes.  Voici quelques unes de mes etudes:

Aunt Aing lives an hour away from my house.  Here Thary is teaching her how to underline the answers. / Tante Aing vit a une heure de chez moi.  Voici Thary qui lui enseigne a souligner les reponses.

Here is Chantoo, Thary, Soknieng and Leang, teenage girls that lives another 45 min away after Aunt Aing. When we start the study, we are usually only about 5 or 6 people. / Voici Chantoo, Thary, Soknieng et Leang, 4 filles adolescentes qui vivent un autre 45 min apres tante Aing.  Quand on commence l'etude, on est normallement seulement 5 ou 6 personnes.

But at the end of the study we are between 25 and 30 people, mostly children. /  Mais a la fin de l'etude on est entre 25 et 30 personnes, principalement des enfants.

It is impolite to call older people by their names.  So I don't know her name but we call her grandma.  She comes regularly to the sunday meeting. / C'est impolie d'appeller une personne plus agee par son nom alors je ne sais pas son nom mais on l'apelle grand maman.  Elle vient regulierement au reunion. 

There are a lot more people i want to present you.  Maybe another time. /  Il y a beaucoup d'autres personnes que j'aimerai bien vous presenter mais se sera pour une prochaine fois.

The next door's wedding

When a man wants to marry a woman, he has to pay an amount decided by the parent.  It can be somethimes 4 or 5 years of salary. When the wedding takes place, the woman's family will take care of the expences. The man will come and live with the woman's family. The wedding celebration will be between 1 1/2 and 3 days. / Quand un homme veut marier une femme, il doit payer un montant d'argent au parents.  Quand il y a le marriage, c'est la famille de la fille qui paie les depenses.  L'homme va vivre avec la famille de sa femme.  La celebration de marriage va durer entre 1 1/2 et 3 jours.

This picture is from my balcony.  Here it is 7h am.  The groom arrives with his family and friends to the brides house to celebrate the wedding.  They are carrying the food that was actually provided and prepared by the girl's parents. There should have 36 different kind of dishes.  /  Cette photo a ete prise de mon balcon.  Il est 7h am. Le marie arrive avec sa famille et les invites a la maison de la marie pour celebrer le mariage.  Ils transportent la nourriture qui a ete preparer par la famille de la marie.  Il doit y avoir 36 differentes sortes de plats.

This is the entrance of the wedding celebration.  It blocks the road completely and the tent is about 3 houses long. Each side of the entrance has bananas and coconuts.  One side is silver and the other is gold. There is also a picture of the couple. / Voici l'entree ou le marriage est celebre.  Ca prend toute la largeur de la route et la tente est a peu pres 3 maisons de long.  Chaque cote de l'entree il y a des bananes et des coconuts.  Un cote en or, l'autre en argent. Il y a aussi une photo du couple.

This is not related to the wedding but we see regularly hundreds of ducks coming or going for a little swim.  They are simply adorable. / Ceci n'a pas rapport au marriage mais on voit regulierement des centaines de canards qui arrivent ou vont se beigner. Ils sont vraiment trop cutes.

December

December is extremly beautiful here.  / C'est extremement beau ici en decembre.

The paddyfields are between green and gold. / Les rizieres sont entre vertes et dores.

Swamps are full of water lilies and other flowers. / Les marecages sont remplis de nenuphars et de d'autres fleurs.

This is how most houses in the villages look like.  People live under their houses where the kitchen and toilets are. They go up stairs mostly to sleep.  That is why we can have our meetings under the house of one family. / Voici comment la pluparts des maisons des villages resemblent.  Les gens vivent sous leur maison ou se trouve la cuisine et les toilettes.  Ils vont en haut principalement pour dormir. C'est pour ca qu on peut avoir nos reunions sous la maison d'une famille.
